For my last article of the year, I decided to share one of my favorite artists, HA:TFELT and her most recent album 1719. HA:TFELT’s real name is Yeeun Park and she used to be a member of the Wonder Girls. They were an OG girl group under JYP Entertainment, one of the biggest entertainment companies in Korea, and had released a lot of hit songs like “Nobody”, “Tell Me”, and “Like This”. The group had disbanded in 2017 after the release of Why So Lonely, which led the members to go off on their own. Yeeun Park had joined Amoeba Culture, an entertainment company, soon after departing with JYP Ent. in order to continue her solo career. She had released 3 single albums before moving to release her first full album on April 23, 2020.
1719 is an album that shares Park’s darkest times and the struggles that she went through as a Wonder Girls member. One of the most eye-catching songs for me is Life Sucks, as I believe it is one of the most personal ones that she had included in her album. The song addresses one of the biggest scandals that she had gone through specifically because of how public it had become. After leaving Wonder Girls, her father and herself were both sued for fraud, but the charges were dropped against Yeeun Park. Her father was a pastor and would scam the members of the church of their money, to which he was sent in jail. This song has a sort of R&B vibe to it and is completely sung in English. It’s not the song that showcases her vocals the most but I believe it's one of the most meaningful ones.
The second song that I would recommend would be "How to Love", which is the last song on the album. It is a calming song, and I think it showcases her vocals very well. I think it’s a nice ending to her album, as the beginning of her album starts off with the struggles in her life and the darkest times that she had faced. Ending it with How to Love represents her efforts in overcoming her struggles and wanting to work towards a happier life. I believe that it ties the album altogether. Overall, I highly recommend this album if you are a fan of R&B or Soul. Although her album is not completely in English, it’s a nice listen.
