Hi, dragons! Now that our 2019-20 school year has been canceled for the rest of the semester, our freshmen’s first year at MCHS ended abruptly as well. We wanted to share some of their experiences and how their first year at MCHS was for them. We interviewed Jordan Stamper and Oscar Cardoza for this article, and here were their experiences being a freshman at Middle College.
I asked them about what their first impressions were of MCHS and how that has changed for them throughout the year. Oscar thought that MCHS was going to be a rough ride, taking both college classes and high school classes at the same time. His response was, “I thought that there was going to be a lot of work. But now that I think about it, it’s not that hard at all. You just have to stay on track of assignments and projects.” Jordan had a similar first impression as Oscar’s. He said, “It was a bit scary to me at first since I didn’t know how it was going to be like attending classes with adults and teenagers on campus. But freshman year was not that bad and didn’t have a lot of work or work I couldn’t handle.”
The first year of a high school student may be one of the most memorable years in their life. So I asked Oscar and Jordan what their first year was like as freshmen. Oscar had this to say about his experience, “My freshman year was awesome. It was fun making friends that I can hang out with. At first, I thought my college classes were going to be harder than my high school classes, but it’s the other way around, which is funny to me.” Jordan’s experience was exciting as well. He had this to say about his freshman year, “This year at MCHS was really fun, and I loved being a student here. I got to meet so many new people, and this school feels like one big family. Being able to learn at the college level and meeting the staff and our teachers were one of the more positive experiences this year.” Adjusting to college classes for the first few months was probably a difficult time for the freshmen, but their endurance and positive attitudes have helped them strive for success.
Lastly, I wanted to know what the freshmen are looking forward to in the next school year as sophomores. Oscar said, “I hope that sophomore year won’t be too stressful for me, and I hope to stay in touch with friends. Keeping my grades up would be one of my top priorities for next year so I hope for that as well.” Jordan said, “I’m looking forward to the new experiences of being a sophomore and also the challenges that sophomore year will bring.” Freshmen year is an overwhelming and exciting time for our students. Sophomore year will surely be eventful as our school is evolving and changing. I hope that the freshmen will succeed in their sophomore year as well as enjoy it too. I wish you all the luck for the next school year and hope to see how you guys have grown from your first year at MCHS!
